From 1885 to 1893, Lethbridge was the western terminus of a narrow-gauge railway between the town and Dunmore Junction on the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) mainline near Medicine Hat. The CPR needed to build a bridge that allowed the railway to cross the Belly (now Oldman) River. That very bridge is now an iconic symbol of Lethbridge, and it holds historical significance for all of Western Canada.
